The Call of the Divine Feminine

Lately, I have been hearing the strong call of the Divine Feminine. Her voice speaks louder. She wants to be heard, felt, and spoken of. She wants to be rebirthed in each of us and would like her presence known.

Perhaps she is calling because the masculine energy which has dominated our civilization for thousands of years has become too destructive. It has created a system of patriarchy, where masculine energy has been used to control, dominate and exploit the people and our planet. It has resulted in neverending wars, imperialism, and the colonization of other cultures; the draining and the fight for Mother earth’s resources; and the social and racial inequities. Mother Earth is crying. There are so many people suffering. What is going on?

As Albert Einstein said, “We can not solve our problems with the same way of thinking that created them.” Ancient and indigenous cultures have spoken about the need to rebalance the masculine and the feminine and bring more divine feminine energy into our consciousness, into our way of being and relating. Vaughn Lewellyn Lee states in The Return of the Feminine World Soul, “understanding the wisdom and the transformative nature of the feminine is essential if we are to move individually and collectively out of the world that masculine consciousness has created.” The return of the divine feminine will give us the tools for personal and global transformation. And her return will begin with each person reclaiming the divine feminine that is within each of us.

We all embody the sacred masculine and the sacred feminine, and these energies are not exclusive to gender. Vaughn Lewellyn Lee states that the masculine focuses on the logical, rational, external, and measurable world, while the feminine focuses on the inner dimension. It belongs to the world of symbols and feelings in a language not well-defined in the prevailing masculine culture.

I’ve gathered several definitions that illustrate the energies and qualities of the Divine Feminine:

The divine feminine is the sacred energy of feminine values — such as unconditional love, compassion, nurturance, understanding, and being helpful to others — that are expressed within you, whether you are male or female, and out into the world.

-Deborah King, Awaken Your Divine Feminine Course-

A love that does not waver. It is a spiritual core. Within it, we exist as cosmic royals, mothers, sisters, daughters of the sun and, moon and stars.

-Marianne Williamson, A Woman’s Worth-

The divine feminine is not a distant God in heaven but a presence that is here with us, it needs to be known again, not just as a myth or spiritual image but as something that belongs to the blood and breath.

-Lewellyn Vaughan Lee, Return of the Feminine and World Soul-

The true feminine brings a deep wisdom rooted in trusting one’s intuition and heart. It is a passionate, creative, and life-giving force. The true feminine supports deep heartfelt nurturing of all creation and the passing along of traditions from one generation to the next.

-Arkan Lushwala, The Time of the Black Jaguar-

Thus, there is no single definition of the feminine, but we can sense her loving, intuitive, and nurturing ways. She is fierce in protecting life and creation. She is a love-giving force; her strength is not in control and domination but in protecting life.

So, how do we connect with the divine feminine? From my experience, to meet her, we must go past the rational, logical nature of the masculine into the inner space of our being, into our hearts. There, we listen to her call, and she will tell us how we can reawaken to her beauty and her energy within us.

A daily practice of meditation and prayer helps us access our interior being. It could take us deep into the inner space between our thoughts and emotions, into the silence where our deep wisdom lies. In this stillness, we also connect with the mystical world of the Divine into the world of Spirit.

Another way to connect with her is to spend more time in nature. Sense the beauty and nurturing energy of Mother Earth. Sit at a park and feel the grass under your feet, hear the sound of the birds in the trees, take in the colors of the flowers you see as you walk through the park, and put your back against a tree. Decorating your home with flowers and plants is another way to bring her energy into your home.

If you enjoy reading, one of the other ways I’ve connected with her is by reading about female deities from different traditions embodying the Divine Feminine's qualities. Study them, create an altar, and perform a ritual. Go to places that contain her energy. Do your research and explore which deity resonates with you and create a relationship with her. Then, call on her for guidance when you need it and listen to what she says.

There are many other ways to the Divine Feminine, including art, singing, and dancing. Engaging in any activity that takes you out of the logical thinking ways of the masculine. Before doing the activity, set the intention to connect with the Divine Feminine Energy. Feel her in the movement of your paintbrush, the pen you are writing with, in your body when you dance, and in your voice when you sing.

But most of all, feel her by being present in everything you do. The masculine is the doer, while the feminine focuses on being. For example, while washing the dishes, be present and don’t think about what you did in the morning or what you need to do later. When conversing with a friend, listen intently to what they are saying, and don’t think about the work you have to do later or the next thing you would like to say.

Once you connect with her and awaken her energy within you, ask her to guide you daily along your journey through all your challenges and all the ups and downs in this journey we call life. She is there for you to give you inner strength. She is there for you to show you the way to love and wisdom.

All you have to do is be still, listen, and intend to connect with her. You are the embodiment of this energy. You don’t have to acquire it. It is already there within you. Do you hear her call, too? What is she whispering to you?
